The White Phial

The White Phial is an ancient, self-refilling relic. Once repaired, it holds a potion of your choice and refills itself once every day.

The White Phial is a legendary flask said to have been shaped from magically infused snow, the very first to fall on the Throat of the World. According to the legend, any liquid placed inside it is amplified and purified, and the phial replenishes whatever it holds. In practice it becomes a free potion that never runs out, as long as you are patient enough to wait for it to refill.

Effects

When the phial is repaired you pick one effect for it. The choices are:

Choice Effect Form ID
Healing Restore 100 points of Health 0010201e
Resist magic Resist 20% of magic for 60 seconds 00102019
Tougher in battle Stamina increased by 20 points for 300 seconds 0010201a
Magical skills Magicka increased by 20 points for 300 seconds 0010201c
More damage One-handed weapons deal 50% more damage for 60 seconds 0010201d
Hidden in shadows 20% harder to detect for 60 seconds 0010201b

The phial weighs 0.5 and refills itself once per day. When empty it counts as a miscellaneous item until it fills up again.

Where to find it

Nurelion, owner of the alchemy shop that bears the phial’s name, has spent most of his life hunting for it. In the quest The White Phial he sends you to Forsaken Cave, where you find the relic along with a Word Wall teaching part of the Marked for Death shout. The phial turns out to be cracked. Nurelion, disappointed, pays only 5 gold, but his apprentice Quintus Navale adds 500 more.

After you finish The Throat of the World, a courier brings word from Quintus, which starts Repairing the Phial. He needs three ingredients to mend it: a Briar Heart, Unmelting Snow and Mammoth Tusk Powder. Once he has them, he restores the phial; Nurelion passes away shortly after, and Quintus lets you choose the effect it will hold.

Good to know

  • Effects from the phial do not replace matching effects from other potions. They stack, so it can be combined with a normal potion of the same kind.
  • Pick your effect carefully when Quintus asks; walking away from the conversation without choosing can leave you without the phial.
  • The healing option is the most broadly useful, but the 300-second Stamina and Magicka boosts last far longer than ordinary fortify potions.

Where to find it

  • Recovered from Forsaken Cave during The White Phial quest
  • Repaired by Quintus Navale in Repairing the Phial
  • Requires a Briar Heart, Unmelting Snow and Mammoth Tusk Powder
