Fur Armor

Fur Armor is the scruffy, non-craftable light armor of Skyrim's bandits, with four cuirass looks and a rare helmet that only a handful of places hold.

Fur Armor is the unofficial uniform of every bandit who has ever shouted “Your money or your life!” from behind a rock. It’s a rugged light armor made from pelts and straps, slightly sturdier than Hide Armor but still very much early-game gear. It comes in several cuirass looks, so two bandits at the same camp rarely look exactly alike.

How to get it

You can’t forge Fur Armor at a smithy, so it has to come from someone else. By far the most common source is bandits: raid a camp, a fort or a tower like Valtheim Towers and odds are the occupants are wearing a piece or two. It also shows up as random loot in chests and on the odd hunter or wanderer, so keep your eyes open in caves and ruins.

The one awkward piece is the helmet. According to Fextralife, only about ten Fur Helmets are known to exist in the game, so completing a full matching set takes some luck or a deliberate search. The cuirass, bracers and shoes are much easier to come by.

Is it worth wearing?

A full set of helmet, cuirass, bracers and shoes adds up to 46 armor rating for 10 weight, which edges out Hide Armor but falls short of Leather Armor. Since leather gear needs no perk to make, there isn’t much mechanical reason to hunt down a complete Fur set unless you love the look. The Fur Shoes are oddly heavier than the bracers, but they are also nearly worthless to a merchant.

Where Fur Armor earns its keep is roleplay. A savage Nord hunter, a reformed bandit or a Companion-style brawler looks right in it. Tempering with leather and the Custom Fit perk will keep it usable a bit longer, but by the time you reach mid-level dungeons you’ll want something like Elven Armor or Scaled Armor.

Good to know

  • Fur Armor cannot be crafted at a forge, but every piece can be improved with leather at a workbench.
  • There are four different-looking versions of the Fur Armor cuirass, all with the same stats.
  • The Fur Helmet is rare: only around ten are known to exist in Skyrim.
