The Lord Stone

Mountaintop standing stone east of Morthal and southwest of Dawnstar granting 50 armor and 25% magic resistance, a favourite for tanky builds.

The Lord Stone is a standing stone high on a mountain east of Morthal, southwest of Dawnstar and northwest of Whiterun, a short walk northeast of the Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon. Its blessing is wonderfully simple: you get tougher against everything. If your playstyle is ‘stand in the middle and refuse to fall over’, this is your stone.

Getting there

The stone stands on a mountain just north of the centre of Skyrim. The easiest landmark is the Daedric shrine below: from there, head a short way northeast and climb towards the stone platform. Keep your weapon ready as you crest the ridge, because the top may already be occupied.

What you’ll find

  • The blessing: +50 armor rating and 25% magic resistance. Neither bonus can push you past the normal resistance caps.
  • Possibly a group of bandits camped on the platform around the stone when you first arrive.
  • Two corundum ore veins near the stone – one at the base of the platform, one on the south side.
  • An orichalcum ore vein directly northeast along the mountain ridge.

Building magic resistance

The Lord Stone is one of several sources that stack towards a very sturdy character. Combine it with:

  • The Breton racial bonus (25%)
  • The Agent of Mara ability (15%)
  • Three ranks of the Magic Resistance perk in the Alteration tree (30%)

Together with the stone’s 25%, that adds up to 95% on paper, but magic resistance is capped at 85%, so anything beyond the cap is wasted.

Tips

Expect a fight on arrival – the bandits up here like the view as much as you will. Bring a pickaxe: the corundum and orichalcum veins make the climb pay off for smiths too. Players who like to tank or chase maximum armor and magic resistance get the most out of it; the Lord Stone is about surviving, not dealing damage, so glass-cannon builds may prefer another sign.
