Hela’s Folly

Half-sunken merchant ship northeast of Dawnstar where the Argonian scavenger Deekus camps, the target of a Dark Brotherhood contract and a possible Helm of Winterhold spot.

Hela’s Folly is a merchant ship that ran aground and partly sank northeast of Dawnstar, on a small island east of the Dawnstar Sanctuary. Its cargo did not go entirely to waste: an Argonian scavenger called Deekus has pitched a small camp next to the wreck and appears to be fishing jewels out of it. There is not much else here, but what there is tends to sparkle.

What you’ll find

  • The wreck itself, with the Captain’s Cabin underwater and a leveled chest inside. Several gems lie almost right underneath that chest.
  • Deekus and his little camp, complete with bedding, a Dibella statue and a locked chest.
  • Slaughterfish in the surrounding water, ready to nibble anyone who goes diving for treasure.

Quests

  • Contract: Kill Deekus – a Dark Brotherhood contract that sends you out to this lonely island.
  • Find the Helm of Winterhold – for Jarl Korir, the helm may turn up in Deekus’s locked chest. Taking it counts as stealing, but there is no bounty and Deekus will not get angry.

Notable items

  • Precious gems both in Deekus’s camp and inside the sunken ship.
  • Two locked chests: one in the camp, one in the ship.
  • Sometimes the rare book N’Gasta! Kvata! Kvakis! turns up in a chest here.
  • It is also one of the possible places to find Meridia’s Beacon.

Tips

Everything inside the ship is free for the taking, but anything in Deekus’s camp is marked as stolen, so check for the red text before you pocket his things – or finish the contract first and stop worrying about it. The captain’s cabin is submerged, so a Waterbreathing spell or potion makes looting a lot less hurried, and keep an eye out for slaughterfish while you are down there.

Good to know

Deekus is not hostile, so you can visit, look around and chat without a fight. Whether he survives your visit is entirely between you and the Night Mother.
