The Atronach Stone

Standing stone east of Darkwater Crossing that gives +50 magicka and 50% spell absorption at the price of halved magicka regeneration.

The Atronach Stone is one of Skyrim’s standing stones, found in the volcanic tundra between Windhelm and Riften. It stands beside the river southeast of Eldergleam Sanctuary, a short walk east of Darkwater Crossing. Activate it and you swap your current stone blessing for a bigger magicka pool and a real shot at shrugging off enemy spells – with one notable catch.

What you’ll find

  • The stone itself, which grants: magicka +50 and 50% spell absorption.
  • The drawback: magicka regeneration is cut by 50%.

Tips

The regeneration penalty sounds harsh, but there are plenty of ways to blunt it. Enchanted rings, amulets, helmets and robes with Regenerate Magicka, the Recovery perks and Regenerate Magicka potions all stack additively, so a dedicated build can more than cancel out the loss. The cost is gear slots, perk points or potions you might have used elsewhere, so the penalty never truly disappears.

The upside is big for anyone who wants to laugh at enemy mages. Combine the stone with Alteration’s Magic Resistance and Atronach perks and the Block perk Elemental Protection, and you can become extremely hard to hurt with spells. Bretons can stack it with their Dragonskin power to become effectively immune to magic while that’s active. Altmer can offset the regen loss with their Highborn power or Regenerate Magicka gear such as the Morokei mask, and with Miraak’s mask (Dragonborn) their magicka pool gets very large indeed.

Not a spellcaster at all? Oddly enough, the stone still works for a pure warrior: the regeneration penalty means nothing if you never cast, and the spell absorption is a free magic shield.

Good to know

Magicka regeneration scales with your maximum magicka, so you can fight the penalty in two ways: add more regeneration, or simply grow your magicka pool. Be aware that spell absorption can also catch your own summoning spells, meaning roughly half of your conjurations may fizzle while you’re under this stone – though the absorbed magicka does come back to you.
