Cragslane Cavern is a small cave north of Shor’s Stone, just off the road towards Riften. Bandits run it as an illegal gambling den where pit wolves are made to fight for an audience, and they deal skooma on the side. A bandit camp out front, a bar inside and a boss in his study – it’s basically a dodgy tavern with a dungeon problem.
What you’ll find
- A camp outside with two tents and bedrolls, a cooking pot, a tanning rack and two locked cages holding pit wolves.
- A bouncer outside on your first visit, plus leveled bandits at the entrance – one outside, one inside.
- The fighting pit inside, with two pit wolves tearing at each other while two or three gamblers watch.
- A barkeep, a bedroll and a locked chest behind the bar.
- More caged pit wolves, plus another locked chest with a bear trap set right in front of it.
- The bandit leader, Butcher, in his study to the left.

Tips
Watch out for the bear trap in front of that second chest; it’s placed for exactly the kind of greedy adventurer you are. If you pick the cage locks instead of using the key, the wolves stay docile and never leave their cages. The unnamed Dunmer who jumps you at the entrance is sometimes impossible to loot – luring him outside before killing him reportedly helps. Also, according to players, clearing the cave before the Skooma Trade quest has started can break that quest, so take care if you plan to become a thane in Riften.
Good to know
Out on the roads you might find a dead bandit surrounded by three pit wolves, carrying orders to round up the runaway animals and bring them back here. Clearly the wolves had other ideas.
