Bonestrewn Crest is a dragon lair crowning a mountain directly south of Witchmist Grove and northeast of Eldergleam Sanctuary, and south of Windhelm. Old stone pillars ring a big Word Wall on the summit, and the ground is covered in mammoth skulls and bones. You come here for a Shout, a dragon soul and a good scrap.
What you’ll find
- A worn dirt path up the eastern side of the mountain to the summit.
- A Word Wall teaching a word of Frost Breath.
- A leveled dragon that you can often spot circling the peak from far away. It keeps coming back even after the location is marked as cleared.
- Mammoth bones, skulls and several empty coffins scattered around the lair.
- One chest just north of the Word Wall.
- Two iron ore veins (one east of the wall below two stone columns, one northeast down at marsh level) and an orichalcum vein on the southwest slope.
- Three skeletons if you arrive before finishing Dragon Rising.
Quests
- Jorleif at the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm can give you a bounty on the dragon here.
- Arngeir may send you here with a miscellaneous task to find the Word of Power.
Notable items
- Word Wall: Frost Breath.
- Chest beside the wall, plus iron and orichalcum ore.
Tips
There is very little cover on the climb, so getting jumped halfway up is not fun. If that happens, head for the triangular ruins to the northwest of the lair and fight from there. Bring a bow or ranged spells and make the dragon come to you. If the dragon just hovers and refuses to fight, waiting a few hours or popping into another nearby location and back is reported to wake it up. And if you killed the dragon before taking Jorleif’s bounty, don’t panic – a new one usually shows up for the quest.
