The Shadow Stone

Standing stone in the hills south of Riften that lets you turn invisible once a day for 60 seconds, sometimes watched by a hostile conjurer.

The Shadow Stone is a standing stone hidden in a small range of hills south of Riften, before you reach the big mountains further south. Touch it and you take on the sign of the Shadow: once per day, you can vanish from sight. For sneaky characters, thieves and anyone who simply hates being seen, it is a tempting pick.

What you’ll find

  • The standing stone itself, granting the Shadow power.
  • A hostile mage – a respawning conjurer or necromancer may be lurking near the stone.

The blessing

Activating the stone lets you become invisible once a day for 60 seconds. The catch is the same as with any invisibility: interact with anything – open a door, grab an item, swing a weapon – and you pop back into view.

Tips

  • Use the power to cross a guarded room or slip past a boss, not to loot. The moment you pick something up, the effect ends.
  • Line up your route first, then trigger it. Sixty seconds is longer than it sounds, but not if you spend half of it deciding where to go.
  • Expect company. If a conjurer or necromancer is around, deal with them before you start fiddling with the stone, or their summons will interrupt you.
  • Because the power recharges daily, wait or sleep before a big infiltration so you are not caught without it.

Good to know

Combat-focused characters may get more out of other stones, but for a stealthy build that wants an emergency escape button, a free minute of invisibility every day is hard to sneeze at.
