Black-Briar Lodge is one of the properties owned by Riften’s wealthy Black-Briar family, set out in the countryside east of Riften. Nobody from the family actually lives here, so it may serve as a holiday home – just one where the welcome committee is a squad of armed mercenaries. Most visitors come for a horse, a stone, or both.
What you’ll find
- Black-Briar mercenaries both outside and inside the lodge. They turn hostile as soon as you approach.
- A stable holding Frost, the horse belonging to Sibbi Black-Briar.
- Three levels: ground floor, upper floor with the master bedroom, and a basement.
- Basement storage with a Mammoth Tusk on a shelf and some Jazbay Grapes.
- A random amulet somewhere in the lodge.
Quests
- Promises to Keep – Louis Letrush wants you to get Frost from Sibbi Black-Briar, and this stable is where the horse is kept.
- No Stone Unturned – one of the Stones of Barenziah rests next to the bed in the upstairs bedroom.
Notable items
- Stone of Barenziah – on the bedside table upstairs.
- Legend of Krately House (Sneak) – on a table in the master bedroom. Fitting reading for anyone sneaking around someone else’s house.
Tips
Since the guards attack on sight, decide early whether you’re going in loud or quiet. A stealthy approach lets you slip upstairs for the Stone and the skill book, then down to the basement, without turning the place into a battlefield. If you’re only here for Frost, the stable is outside, so you may not need to enter the lodge at all. Bear in mind that this is Black-Briar property – the mercenaries are paid not to ask questions, and they won’t give you time to explain yourself either.
Good to know
The lodge is a good example of how far the Black-Briar family’s money stretches beyond the city walls: a guarded house nobody even lives in.
