Grimsever’s Return is the personal quest of Mjoll the Lioness, the self-appointed protector of Riften in the Rift. On her last adventure she was nearly killed by a Dwarven Centurion in the Dwemer ruin of Mzinchaleft, and while Aerin carried her home and nursed her back to health, her sword stayed behind. Without Grimsever she feels half-naked, and you get to go and fetch it.
How to start
Mjoll will only hand out the quest if two conditions are met:
- You are at least level 14.
- She likes you. The quickest way is to agree with her that the Thieves Guild is a blight on Riften. Doing favours for other Riften citizens also raises her opinion of you.
Once she is friendly, ask about her past and her sword. She explains how she lost it in Mzinchaleft and the quest begins.
Walkthrough
Locate Grimsever
Travel to Mzinchaleft in the north of the Pale and fight your way through the ruin; the location page has the full dungeon layout. Expect Dwemer automatons on the way down.
The sword lies in the final section, the Mzinchaleft Gatehouse, which also holds a passage down to Blackreach. This room is guarded by a leveled Dwarven Centurion backed up by a Dwarven Sphere, so come prepared: shock damage, a strong follower or plenty of healing potions help. Once the Centurion is down, look behind the spot where it started, to the right of the archway. Grimsever rests there beside a splash of blood, a grim reminder of how Mjoll’s last visit ended.
Return to Mjoll
Head back to Riften and give the sword to Mjoll. She is overjoyed to have it back and offers to travel with you, which completes the quest.
Rewards
- Mjoll the Lioness becomes available as a follower.
Tips and notes
- Grimsever is a unique glass sword. After Mjoll joins you, you can give her a better weapon and take Grimsever for yourself without any penalty.
- Mjoll is also a marriage candidate. She shares her home with Aerin in Riften.
- If Mjoll refuses to give the quest even though you meet the requirements, gaining a level and then talking to her again usually unlocks it.
- Because the Gatehouse leads into Blackreach, this trip combines nicely with other Dwemer business in the area.
