J’zargo’s Flame Cloak Scroll is a special scroll handed out by J’zargo at the College of Winterhold. He gives the Dragonborn ten of them during the quest J’zargo’s Experiment.
Effect
For 30 seconds after reading, the scroll wraps you in fire: any opponent within melee range takes 10 points of fire damage per second, and targets that are already burning take extra damage. The cloak only hits enemies standing close to you, so it rewards fighting at arm’s length.
Against the undead
The scrolls are at their best against the undead, which they burn down almost instantly. The catch is what happens next: an undead foe killed by the cloak explodes, and the blast damages everyone nearby, the Dragonborn included. Wading into a group of several undead can trigger a chain of explosions that kills you on the spot.
Tips
- Fight undead one or two at a time rather than charging into a crowd.
- Tell your followers to wait at a distance. Both the flames and the explosions can hurt them, and the damage may make them turn on you.
- Think twice before handing the scrolls to a follower – they may read one in battle and burn you if you stand too close.
