The Whispering Door

The Whispering Door is Mephala’s Daedric quest – and it happens right under Jarl Balgruuf‘s nose in Dragonsreach.

How to start

Once you’ve reached level 20 and completed Dragon Rising, talk to Hulda at the Bannered Mare in Whiterun. She mentions that the Jarl’s children have been acting strangely. Ask Balgruuf about it, and he tells you his youngest son, Nelkir, has taken a dark turn.

Walkthrough

Nelkir is full of nasty secrets about his family – whispered to him by a voice behind a locked door in the basement. Listen at the door: it’s Mephala, the Lady of Whispers. She wants someone with more “agency” than a child. Convince Balgruuf to let you investigate and get the key, open the door and take the Ebony Blade.

Good to know

If Whiterun has gone to the Stormcloaks in the civil war, Balgruuf can be found in the Blue Palace in Solitude instead.
