Maven Black-Briar is the matriarch of the Black-Briar family and, for all practical purposes, the one who really runs Riften. The meadery that bears her name makes her rich; her ties to the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood make her untouchable.
The power behind the throne
Maven claims to have Jarl Laila Law-Giver and the city guard in her pocket, and nobody in Riften seems eager to prove her wrong. People who cross her tend to end up dead or in jail – even members of her own family. Her enforcer Maul makes sure everyone gets the message.
Jarl Maven
If the Imperial Legion takes the Rift in the civil war, Maven becomes Jarl of Riften. As she puts it herself, the title is just a formality.
Where to find her
Around Riften: the marketplace, the Black-Briar Meadery, the Bee and Barb inn and Black-Briar Manor. Her children are Hemming, Ingun and Sibbi.
