High Hrothgar is the ancient monastery of the Greybeards, perched high on the slopes of the Throat of the World, the tallest mountain in Tamriel. The masters of the Voice live here in near-silence, meditating on the Way of the Voice – and when they do speak, the whole of Skyrim hears it.
Getting there
The way up starts in the village of Ivarstead in The Rift, where the 7,000 Steps wind up the mountain past ten etched tablets that tell the story of the Voice. Expect cold, wolves and at least one frost troll on the way. Bring warm clothes, a few potions and some patience.
The Greybeards
Four Greybeards live here: Arngeir, who speaks for the others, and Borri, Einarth and Wulfgar, whose voices are so powerful that a single word could knock you over. Above the monastery, at the summit, lives their true master – the dragon Paarthurnax.
Role in the story
After Dragon Rising, the Greybeards summon you here in The Way of the Voice to test whether you really are Dragonborn and to teach you new words of power. They then send you to Ustengrav in The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, and High Hrothgar remains a key place for the rest of the main quest.
Good to know
Once you have finished their trials, the Greybeards can teach you the words of shouts you have found – just ask Arngeir.
