Find Runil’s Journal is a radiant miscellaneous quest in Falkreath, in Falkreath Hold. Runil, the Priest of Arkay who tends the town’s Hall of the Dead, kept a journal during the Great War and has since lost it. You fetch it back from whichever cave or ruin it ended up in, and the old priest is very grateful.
How to start
- Speak to Runil in Falkreath. He may bring up his missing journal and ask you to find it.
- The quest shares its internal setup with fetch quests from Frida, Noster Eagle-Eye, Roggi Knot-Beard and Oengul War-Anvil. If you already have one of those open, Runil will not offer his until it is finished.

Find the journal
Runil points you to a randomly chosen location, usually a cave, and a map marker is added. The journal is somewhere inside, so expect to clear out whatever has moved in. Possible locations include:
- Bloated Man’s Grotto
- Darkshade (shown as Darkshade Copse)
- Embershard Mine
- Greywater Gorge (as the source names it)
- Halldir’s Cairn
- Moss Mother Cavern
- North Brittleshin Pass
- Southfringe Sanctum
- Sunderstone Gorge
Return the journal to Runil
Bring the journal back to Runil in Falkreath. He thanks you warmly and pays you a sum of gold that scales with your level.

- Counts as one of the favours toward Thane of Falkreath
Tips and notes
- Because the destination is radiant, it is worth accepting the quest before you explore Falkreath Hold’s caves, so you can pick the journal up on the way instead of making a return trip.
- Several of the possible locations, such as Embershard Mine and Halldir’s Cairn, have their own quests and dangers; check your map marker before heading out.
