Riften’s skooma problem does not stop at the warehouse door. While cleaning out the Riften Warehouse during The Raid, the Dragonborn finds a letter that points to the real supply base: Cragslane Cavern. Hand it to the Jarl of the Rift and you are sent to shut the operation down, permanently.
How to start
- Reach the Riften Warehouse during the quest The Raid.
- Kill Sarthis Idren and his thugs, who attack on sight.
- In the basement, take the note Shipment’s Ready from a satchel and read it. In it, a supplier named Kilnyr announces a fresh load of Moon Sugar from Morrowind being refined into skooma at Cragslane Cavern.
- Bring the note to the Jarl of Riften.
Walkthrough
1. Report to the Jarl
Give the Jarl the information from the letter. The order is blunt: go to Cragslane Cavern and eliminate everyone inside. If the Imperial Legion took Riften during the Civil War or through the peace talks in Season Unending, the Jarl is Maven Black-Briar, and she is the one you report to.
2. Travel to Cragslane Cavern
The cave lies north of Riften. Outside you will meet a lone bandit and two caged pit wolves. A guard waits just inside the entrance.
3. Disrupt the skooma operation
The tunnel opens into a wide gambling den where three gamblers and a barkeep hang around a ring with a pit wolf inside it. All of them are hostile. Deeper in you will find more bandits and further caged wolves. Every human enemy has to die for the objective to complete; the wolves in cages do not matter.
Loot the barkeep for a chest key. It opens an Apprentice-locked chest in the north-western corner of the bar, holding Moon Sugar, skooma and the book The Wolf Queen, Book I, which raises Lockpicking by one point when read.
4. Report back
With the cave cleared, return to the Jarl, who thanks you for your continued service to Riften and hands over your reward.
Rewards
- A leveled enchanted weapon
- Leveled gold, but only if Maven Black-Briar is the Jarl. She nearly calls it your cut before correcting herself.
Tips and notes
- Do not visit Cragslane Cavern early. If you explore or clear the cave before reading the letter, the quest may be impossible to finish. The game counts seven kills inside the cave after the quest starts; if those enemies are already dead, you have to wait for the three respawning enemies (every thirty in-game days) until seven kills have been tallied.
- The quest depends on The Raid being in your journal. Without it, the letter may not start anything.
- If the quest breaks because the cave will not respawn, Hemming Black-Briar may still offer Honeyside for sale without you first becoming Thane of the Rift.
- Maven’s gold bonus makes this one of the rare quests where she is the more generous Jarl.
