The Torturer’s Hood is a unique light helmet with 13 armor rating and a weight of just 1. There is no enchantment, but for something you can pick up in the very first dungeon of the game, that armor value is surprisingly good. It is also, let’s be honest, one of the creepiest looks in Skyrim.
How to get it
The game files list the Torturer in Helgen Keep and an Imperial Mage at Helgen as wearers. You meet the Torturer and his assistant in the torture room on the bottom floor of the keep during Unbound:
- If you follow Ralof, the Torturer and his assistant are hostile – defeat them and take the hood.
- If you follow Hadvar, escaping Stormcloaks attack the torturers; if the old man survives, he stays behind and you will have a harder time getting the hood without a fight.
The hood also turns up later: a leveled list puts it on some Thief enemies, so you might bump into another one on the road.
Is it worth wearing?
Early on, yes. Thirteen armor rating at weight 1 beats most starter light helmets, including the Imperial light helmet the Torturer would otherwise wear. It falls behind once you find or forge better gear, and with no enchantment slot used you will want a proper enchanted helmet later. As a role-play piece for an assassin or a necromancer, though, it never really goes out of style.
Good to know
- The Torturer wears Imperial light armor with this hood instead of the usual helmet.
- He fights with Destruction magic rather than his steel dagger.
- He is convinced the dragon attack is “nonsense” – fine dialogue to stick around for.
