Roggi’s Ancestral Shield

An iron family heirloom lost in a cave long ago, which Roggi Knot-Beard of Kynesgrove asks you to bring back from a random dungeon.

Roggi’s Ancestral Shield is a unique heavy shield, an old iron shield with a lot of family pride and very little magic. It has no enchantment. Its owner, Roggi Knot-Beard, wants it back because one of his ancestors lost it in a cave, and he has never quite gotten over that.

How to get it

Talk to Roggi in Kynesgrove to start the quest Find Roggi Knot-Beard’s Ancestral Shield. The game then hides the shield in one of these places:

Clear the dungeon, grab the shield and take it back to Roggi for your reward and his eternal gratitude.

Is it worth wearing?

Honestly, no. With an armor rating of 20 it performs like a plain iron shield, and although it can be tempered with an iron ingot, it does not benefit from any Smithing perks. That means it tops out at flawless quality unless you push your Smithing above 100 with enchanted gear and potions. Any crafted steel shield or better will serve you more.

Treat it as a quest item, a nice excuse to explore Eastmarch and its surroundings, and a way to make a sad Nord a bit happier. The quest is short, the reward is modest, and the dungeons on the list range from bandit hideouts to old Nord ruins, so the difficulty depends a lot on where the game decides to hide it. If you are still low level, check the marker before heading out, since some of the places are more dangerous than a simple family errand suggests.

Good to know

  • The shield is only available during the quest; it is not found elsewhere.
  • After the quest, players report a copy can turn up in Steamscorch Mine, no longer marked as a quest item.
  • Roggi has no extra dialogue about the shield once the quest is done.
