Targe of the Blooded is a unique heavy shield covered in spikes, and those spikes do exactly what you hope they do: every bash makes the target bleed for 3 damage per second for 5 seconds. It is carried by Umana, a Redguard bodyguard on the doomed Dwemer expedition in Alftand.
How to get it
You get one shot at this shield, from Umana herself.
- Explore Alftand, usually while following the main quest towards Blackreach.
- Near one of the entrances into Blackreach you will find Umana arguing with her employer, Sulla Trebatius.
- The two end up fighting each other, and the survivor turns on you.
- Once both are dead, loot the Targe from Umana’s body.
Umana is the only source of the shield, so do not leave her corpse behind, and loot it before you head deeper.
Is it worth wearing?
As a defensive item, not really. Its base armor rating is 20 at 8 weight, which is roughly steel tier, and it tempers with a steel ingot, so it improves easily but never catches up with Ebony or Daedric shields. The bleed only triggers on bashes, and 15 damage in total is a minor bonus for players who bash a lot. Players note that its bleed ties with an Ebony War Axe in bleeding damage.
Where it shines is flavour and fun: a shield-bash build that wants a bit of extra damage, or a roleplay character who likes spiky things. For serious defence, Auriel’s Shield or the Shield of Ysgramor are better picks.
Good to know
- Because the bleed counts as damage, using it in a brawl can turn the fistfight into a real fight and earn you a bounty.
- Umana also wears most of a Steel Plate Armor set.
- Many player homes have a wall mount for it.
