South Shriekwind Bastion is one of the ways into Shriekwind Bastion, an ancient Nordic tomb on the mountainside northeast of Falkreath. A short flight of steps leads up to the door, and unlike North Shriekwind Bastion, which starts you at the beginning, this entrance drops you roughly halfway into the dungeon through a hidden door. It’s the express lane – with draugr at the turnstile.
What you’ll find
- A welcoming committee: a draugr bursts from a sarcophagus as you approach, a skeleton comes at you and another draugr guards the door.
- Sometimes a troll wanders over before you even reach the entrance.
- Inside, the wider bastion holds vampires, their thralls, draugr, skeletons and a Master Vampire, plus a Word Wall for Elemental Fury near the far end.
- A small room in the ruin crammed with about a dozen pairs of shoes, including the rare fur-lined boots and pleated shoes.
Notable items
- Pulling the chain that opens the hidden door from this side drops a leveled enchanted greatsword.
- Fur-lined boots and pleated shoes in the shoe room – one of very few places to find them.
- Elsewhere in the bastion: the Speech skill book 2920, Second Seed (v5) and a possible spot for Meridia’s Beacon (see The Break of Dawn).
Tips
To get here, leave Falkreath by the mill, head up the road until a dirt trail branches off, follow it and take the left turn, then keep going straight until the ruin comes into view. Expect the sarcophagus ambush on the stairs, so climb with your weapon already drawn. If you want to see the whole dungeon in order, start from the north entrance instead; if you just want the good bits sooner, this door is your friend.
Good to know
A shoe hoard in a vampire-infested tomb raises a lot of questions. Nobody in Skyrim seems interested in answering them.
