Harsh Master

Kill the leader of a bandit gang formed by a deserter from Kjar’s ship, the North Wind, docked in Windhelm, for a leveled gold reward.

Some sea captains take desertion personally. Kjar, master of the ship North Wind in Windhelm, lost a sailor who decided leading a band of thieves would pay better than hauling cargo. He wants that gang turned into an example, and he is willing to pay a year’s wages for it. This radiant bounty-style quest in Eastmarch is quick, simple and pays well.

How to start

Head down to the Windhelm docks: go through the Gray Quarter toward the city gates and take the steps down to the waterfront. Find Kjar aboard or beside the North Wind and ask if he is the captain. He will offer you the job; answer that the bandits are as good as dead to accept (refusing just earns you a scornful “coward”).

Walkthrough

Kill the bandit leader

The target is chosen by the radiant quest system, so the hideout varies. The possible locations are:

Travel to the marked location. You only have to kill the bandit leader, whose position is marked on your map – clearing out the rest of the gang is optional, though in practice you will usually fight through them to reach the boss.

Return to Kjar

Go back to Windhelm and tell Kjar his former crewman has been dealt with. He pays up and advises you not to spend it all on mead.

Rewards

Gold, scaled to your level when you complete the quest:

  • Level 1-9: 500 gold
  • Level 10-19: 750 gold
  • Level 20-29: 1,000 gold
  • Level 30-39: 1,250 gold
  • Level 40+: 1,500 gold

Tips and notes

  • Because the reward scales with level, it can pay to accept the quest early and turn it in after a level-up threshold.
  • Several of the possible hideouts are also used by other quests, so the location may already be cleared or occupied by a different group.
  • Players report the quest can become repeatable after installing the DLC, provided you wait about 30 days for the locations to respawn.

Choices & consequences

Known bugs & fixes

If the Thieves Guild job against the Summerset Shadows is done, Uttering Hills Cave may be picked with no leader at the marker, making the quest uncompletable; killing a bandit leader at another of the listed locations can complete it. Krev the Skinner may reappear at Gallows Rock if killed during a Companions quest.
