Esbern’s Potion

Esbern’s Potion is a one-time brew from Esbern after Dragon Research that permanently grants the Dragon Infusion ability against dragons.

Esbern’s Potion is a one-of-a-kind brew made for the Dragonborn by Esbern. It is not something you can find lying around or buy from a merchant. Instead, Esbern brews it once, from materials you bring him, and drinking it leaves you permanently better protected against dragon attacks.

Effects

Drinking the potion grants the Dragon Infusion ability. Unlike ordinary potions, the effect does not wear off: it is a permanent ability rather than a timed buff. With Dragon Infusion, you take 25% less melee damage from dragons. The official game guide gives a lower figure of 10%, so the exact number depends on which source you trust.

Where to find it

The potion is the reward for the quest Dragon Research, which Esbern hands out. To complete it you need to bring him one dragon bone and one dragon scale. Once he has both, he brews the potion and gives it to you. Only one copy exists, so it is not something you can farm.

Good to know

  • The bonus only counts once you actually drink the potion, so do not leave it sitting in your inventory.
  • The quest asks for exactly one of each material, so keep a dragon bone and a dragon scale aside instead of selling or crafting with them all.
  • It has a base value of 250, but its permanent effect is worth far more than any sale price.
