Hert is a Nord who runs Half-Moon Mill with her husband Hern. On the surface it’s a quiet life of sawing logs by the lake. Underneath, both of them are vampires who feed on the travellers who stop by – a neat trick that lets them keep living in the sunlight.
Where to find them
She works at Half-Moon Mill, north of Falkreath. The mill supplies wood to Falkreath and, until recently, also supplied Helgen.
Quests
When Hern becomes the target of the Dark Brotherhood’s “Contract: Kill Hern”, Hert acts as his bodyguard. If you kill Hern, sheathing your weapon may calm her down. With Dawnguard installed she can be one of the people kidnapped by vampires in a rescue quest – amusing, given what she is (Dawnguard).
Services
Hert buys firewood at five gold per piece, so chopping wood here is an easy early source of coin. With Hearthfire she can also let you use the sawmill – sell her some firewood first and she’ll agree (Hearthfire).
Personality & relationships
She’s warm and welcoming to strangers, though she grumbles that the war keeps travellers off the roads and that the patrols never leave her and Hern alone. Ask whether she likes living out in the woods and she says other people only make things complicated – they get everything they need from the occasional traveller. Shudder.
Good to know
If you’ve become a stage-four vampire yourself (not a Vampire Lord), she attacks on sight. If Hern dies out of her sight, she carries on as if he were alive. Oddly, you can receive a letter of inheritance about her even after killing the pair. If the sun is blotted out at the end of the vampire storyline, she celebrates loudly (Dawnguard). Raising her with Dead Thrall can make her talk normally again after a while.
