Amaund Motierre is a Breton aristocrat from one of Tamriel’s oldest and richest families. He’s the client behind the biggest job the Dark Brotherhood has had in centuries: the murder of the Emperor himself. When you first meet him he seems calm and confident. The longer the contract drags on, the more of a nervous wreck he becomes.
Where to find them
Motierre first hides out in the ancient crypt of Volunruud with his loyal bodyguard Rexus. After Death Incarnate he moves to The Bannered Mare in Whiterun.
Quests
- Whispers in the Dark: the Night Mother speaks his name and tells her new Listener to find him. Astrid doesn’t like it and sends you on other contracts instead. If you go to Volunruud right away, though, Motierre is already waiting for you.
- The Silence Has Been Broken: Motierre asks for several killings that pave the way to the real target, the Emperor. Rexus hands you a sealed letter and a valuable amulet to give to your superior. Astrid then sends you to Delvin Mallory to value the amulet.
- Hail Sithis!: after the Brotherhood is nearly destroyed, you track Motierre down at the Bannered Mare. He’s shocked you’re alive and eager to blame Commander Maro. He tells you the real Emperor is aboard The Katariah off Solitude. When the deed is done, he sends you back to Volunruud, where 20,000 gold waits in an urn in the chamber where you first met.
There’s a twist: the dying Emperor asks you to kill whoever ordered his death. Once you’ve collected your fee, you can grant that wish. Motierre’s body holds some rare gems, and you may later get an inheritance letter. If you spare him, he stays at the Bannered Mare with nothing more to say.
Personality & relationships
Motierre is fussy, smug and very aware of his own importance. He calls Volunruud a foul place, gets snippy when you talk in riddles, and can’t wait to be rid of you. He trusts Rexus completely, since the man has served his family since Amaund was a child. As for why he wants the Emperor dead, he only compares it to the assassination of Pelagius Septim, which changed Imperial policy. Beyond that, he says he’s not at liberty to explain.
Good to know
- Babette notes that the Motierre name was already old, rich and powerful before she became a vampire three centuries ago.
- His look changes over the questline, from a neatly groomed man with a ponytail to a scruffy, bearded noble with short hair.
- He shares a voice actor with Ancano.
