Odahviing

Odahviing is Alduin's red-scaled lieutenant – the dragon you trap in Dragonsreach, who then flies you to Skuldafn and can later be called into battle.

Odahviing is a dragon whose name means “Snow – Hunter – Wing”. Long dead and buried after the Dragon War, he is raised by Alduin during the dragon crisis and serves as one of his closest lieutenants – until he meets you.

The Fallen

To find out where Alduin has gone, you need to capture one of his dragons. In The Fallen you learn Odahviing’s name as a Shout, call him to the Great Porch of Dragonsreach and trap him in the ancient dragon yoke. Once caught, he is surprisingly pragmatic: Alduin’s weakness has made him question his master, and he respects strength.

The flight to Skuldafn

Odahviing tells you that Alduin has gone to Skuldafn to reach Sovngarde – and that only a dragon can fly you there. If you set him free, he carries you to the temple in The World-Eater’s Eyrie.

An ally

After that, Odahviing recognises you as the stronger dragon. Using the Call Dragon Shout outdoors brings him to fight by your side for a while – one of the most fun rewards in the main quest.
