Chillrend is a unique glass sword that freezes and paralyzes its victims – a weapon that returns from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. In Skyrim it belongs to Mercer Frey, the leader of the Thieves Guild in Riften, which tells you a lot about how you are going to get it.
How to get Chillrend
Chillrend is tied to the Thieves Guild questline. During the quest “Hard Answers” you break into Mercer Frey’s house, Riftweald Manor in Riften, where the sword sits in a display case. If you leave it there, Mercer still has it on him later in the questline and you can take it after defeating him.
Leveled weapon
Chillrend is leveled: its damage, enchantment strength and value depend on your character level when you first pick it up. The strongest version (level 46 or higher) has the stats listed here – 15 base damage and 30 points of frost damage. If you want the best version, it is worth leaving it in the display case until you are higher level.
Enchantment
Each hit deals frost damage (which also drains stamina) and has a chance to paralyze the target for 2 seconds. A paralyzed enemy is a helpless enemy, which makes Chillrend excellent for one-handed builds and sneaky assassins alike.
Smithing
Improved at a grindstone with Refined Malachite. The Glass Smithing perk doubles the improvement.
How to get it
Display case in Riftweald Manor, Riften, during the Thieves Guild quest Hard Answers. If left behind, Mercer Frey carries it later in the questline.
