Trolls are big, angry, three-eyed apes that regenerate health faster than you’d like. The regular Troll lurks in caves and forests, while the white-furred Frost Troll prefers the mountains – and is a notorious early-game wall for new players.
Where to find them
Caves and rocky areas across Skyrim. A Frost Troll famously waits on the 7,000 Steps up to High Hrothgar, which surprises a lot of players during The Way of the Voice.
Variants
Troll and Frost Troll in the base game, plus armored versions added by Dawnguard.
Abilities & attacks
- Fast health regeneration
- Heavy claw attacks and leaping strikes
How to beat it
Fire is the key: trolls take 50% extra fire damage, and burning them also slows their regeneration. Because they heal so fast, hit-and-run doesn't work – stay on them and keep the pressure up. Paralysis and lingering Damage Health poisons are also very effective. On the 7,000 Steps you can also use arrows from the narrow path, or simply run past the Frost Troll.
Loot & harvestables
Troll Fat (always)
Minor loot: gold, gem or ring (sometimes)
Lore & trivia
The in-game book Troll Slaying is a handy field guide on fighting trolls and collecting their fat. If you join the Dawnguard, you can hire an armored troll as an animal follower.
