Uthgerd the Unbroken is a Nord warrior who spends most of her time at the Bannered Mare in Whiterun. She once tried to join the Companions, but during her trial she accidentally killed the boy she was fighting – and she has held a grudge against Jorrvaskr ever since.
How to recruit Uthgerd
Talk to her and accept her challenge: a brawl with a 100 gold wager. Win, and she pays up and becomes available as a follower. The fight is quite easy, even at low level – just put your weapons away and use your fists.
As a follower
Uthgerd is a capable heavy-armored fighter with good One-Handed, Archery and Block, levelling with you up to level 30. She will not join in on crimes.
Marriage and more

- Steward: can look after a Hearthfire homestead.
- Blades: can be recruited into the Blades.
Good to know
She is one of the earliest followers you can get – handy if you want company long before finishing any faction questline.
